The Black Skirts, a prominent South Korean indie rock band, was founded in 2010 by Jo Hyu II or Bryan Cho. Known for their distinctive blend of lo-fi indie rock and shoegaze, their music features dreamy melodies and powerful guitar riffs. Drawing inspiration from classic rock legends like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, as well as modern indie acts like Sonic Youth, The Black Skirts have released critically acclaimed albums such as Don’t You Worry Baby, I’m Only Swimming (2011) and Ride Me High (2013). Their discography also includes Toxic (2015) and Abandoned Ship (2017), along with a compilation album, Black Skirt Archive 1 (2012).
Throughout their career, The Black Skirts have collaborated with notable artists such as Lee Hi and Zion.T, and have performed at major music festivals in South Korea, including the Busan One Asia Festival. Their influence has been instrumental in popularizing the lo-fi sound in the Korean indie music scene, inspiring a new generation of musicians. Their songs have been featured in various films and TV shows, solidifying their legacy as one of South Korea’s most beloved indie rock bands.
